Salmonella and production errors spark recalls

Salmonella, production errors and undeclared allergens in food have sparked recalls over the past week, reported the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

TRS Wholesale recalled 100g packs of its turmeric powder as a precautionary measure, as the product could contain salmonella. Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

The recall applied to products with the batch code P41411 and the best-before date of 31 October 2019.

TRS technical manager Abid Amin apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers, advising them to return the product to the store it was bought from to receive a full refund.

Milk contamination

A production error was the cause of a recall of Interlink Direct’s CG Classic Coconut Candy this week, after the product was accidentally contaminated with milk during the production process.

Candies with the best-before date of 6 August 2019 and a pack size of 250g were included in the recall. This posed a possible health risk to consumers with an allergy or intolerance to milk.

This week also saw a labelling error lead to the recall of Nevis Bakery’s Empire Biscuits, because they contained egg that was not mentioned on the packaging.

Possible health risk

The inclusion of the ingredients meant the product was a possible health risk to consumers with an allergy or intolerance to eggs.

Nevis recalled 110g packs of the biscuits with the batch codes 001 and 094. Products with the best-before dates of 2 April 2018 and 2 July 2018 were included.

The FSA website advised customers who had bought the product and had an allergy or intolerance to eggs to return it to the store it was purchased from to receive a full refund.

Meanwhile, last month, labelling errors sparked a number of food recalls, including breaded cod fillets sold by retailer the Co-op.
