Food Safety Conference: regulation and threats in focus

Entitled ‘A focus on future law and threats’, the all-day conference will be held at etc.venues Maple House, Birmingham, on Thursday 21 June.

Heading the speaker line-up is Nina Purcell, director of Wales and local delivery at the Food Standards Agency (FSA), who will offer an update on the move to a new risk-based approach to inspecting food and drink businesses.

Andy Morling, head of the FSA’s National Food Crime Unit, meanwhile, will discuss the nature and scope of recently reported food safety offences.

Other speakers include:

• Greencore group technical director Helen Sisson on a new industry-wide information-sharing initiative.
• Sue Davies, strategic policy adviser at Which?, on how risk and uncertainty might change as the deadline for the UK to leave the EU approaches.
• Bertrand Emond, head of membership and training at Campden BRI, on the essential steps needed to create the right food safety culture, from head office to factory floor.
• Barbara Hirst, consultant for food safety and quality at RSSL, on reducing the risk of allergen contamination in the factory.

The conference will be chaired by Professor Steven Walker, director general at Campden BRI.

Meanwhile, developing trust with food safety regulators was the key focus point at last year’s Food Manufacture Food safety conference, according to Professor Walker.
