Investigations found that a fault drive belt “through abnormal wear” caused the pastry to become contaminated, after routine procedures identified part processed pastry contained metal, an Addo Food Group spokesman told Food Manufacture.
“Some of the metal may have been too small to be picked up by metal detectors,” the spokesman said. However, no finished products have been found to contain metal.
“We have not received any consumer complaints, but as a precaution, the company is recalling the products listed in the alert.”
‘Too small for metal detectors’
The recall applied to 59 products supplied as own-label for retailers Aldi, Nisa and Tesco and products produced under the Walls and Millers Brands. The affected retailers also conducted their own recalls.
Included in the recall were Two-packs of Minced Steak & Onion Slices sold by Aldi, Nisa Heritage Beef Pasties, Millers Chicken Tikka Slices and Tesco Chicken & Gravy Shortcrust Pies. A full list can be found below.
Consumers that have bought the affected products were advised not to eat them and instead return them the store they were purchased from to receive a full refund.
Meanwhile, soft drinks manufacturer AG Barr has recalled a number of its bottled drinks, because a fault in the packaging process could cause the caps on these drinks to pop off unexpectedly and cause injury.
Food Safety Conference

‘Huge cost to Addo’
Commenting on the Addo recall, Hilary Ross, head of retail, food and hospitality at law firm DWF said: “Addo Group’s mass recall of more than 50 products is a manufacturer’s worst nightmare – and will no doubt result in huge costs, both financial and reputational.
“The Group will be looking at a six-figure sum for recall, which are likely to involve advertising costs as well as point of sale information. The cost to the brand’s reputation could be equally high if this incident results in the loss of accounts with major retailers.”
The costs could be mitigated if Addo Group is insured, said Ross, but manufacturers often did not have this type of insurance and even if they do, the nuances of the policies could make it very difficult to claim.
“Addo Group is a leading manufacturer in the UK market, with many sites and a turnover of over £1bn, “To satisfy its retail customers, it must explain how the damage to machinery occurred and what it is doing to ensure that this kind of incident never happens again.
“Unless Addo Group can provide these reassurances quickly, there’s a real risk that its major customers will start sourcing elsewhere – and it will be difficult for the Group to regain these accounts.”
