AB InBev’s Preston brewery faces industrial action

A Lancashire brewery faces strike action over claims a senior health and safety rep was dismissed for challenging a management request for health and safety reasons.

The GMB union has claimed that Paul Morley, who was employed at AB InBev’s plant at Cuerdale Lane, Samlesbury, near Preston was sacked on 13 June for raising concerns over an initiative to speed up brewing.

The GMB claimed Morley was sacked for highlighting that management had not conducted a proper assessment into fatigue caused by the new process.

As a result, the union said its members at the site had held a full industrial action ballot in reaction to the decision, results of which are expected early next week.

‘Disgrace’

“Paul Morley has been sacked simply for trying to look after the wellbeing of his colleagues,” said GMB regional organiser Shaun Buckley. “It’s a disgrace.”

“GMB understands management may want to streamline processes. All we ask is they follow the appropriate health and safety assessments in doing so.

“Now GMB members will have the opportunity to support Paul by voting for strike action.”

‘Responsible brewer’

An AB InBev spokesperson told Food Manufacture: “As a responsible brewer and business, health and safety is our number one priority.

“While we can’t comment on individual or ongoing employee cases, we are confident that all processes adhere to our high standards of health and safety, as well as legal requirements. This has been confirmed using a certified assessment tool from the UK body, the Health & Safety Executive.

“As part of our focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of our colleagues, we will continue to have a dialogue with trade union representatives.”

AB InBev produces brands such as Budweiser and Stella Artois.
