A complex 3D pack design for Nestlé, which took roughly a third of the time typically taken from concept to consumer, has underlined digital print’s ability to deliver speedy solutions and streamline customers’ decision-making.

Development of the Kit Kat Senses carton, produced by AR Packaging and launched in February this year, only started in January 2017.

“Normally, a project of this type with a large multinational might take up to three years,” said key account manager Svetlana Kourianova.

“Typically, on the brand-owner side, there tends to be a lot of people who need to agree on each stage of the project,” she said. In this case, a team at Nestlé’s Product Technology Centre in York managed the entire international project.

Kourianova added: “The client used to see just a white prototype, which doesn’t help them [see] what the final pack will look like.  Here, HP digital print was used to produce ... samples of the carton, where the sealed lid lifts off to allow the sides of the inner tray to unfold.”
