Fifth-generation family member Tristan Powter (pictured left) said the deal was a substantial milestone for the business and the first step in expanding nationally.
“We have been producing our sausages for generations and have a fantastic following in East Anglia but we now want to increase our production and distribution and with Tesco we are able to make a dent in that plan,” he added.
Established in 1880, Powters has worked with Tesco for some years selling its Newmarket Pig and Skinny Pig sausages in the local area. The producer said the latest listing would allow it to target a new range of potential customers from further afield.
Powters’ range
Powters’ range of sausages includes Chilli Pig, Tipsy Pig, Scrumpy Pig, Pigolatas, Party Pig, Chef’s Pig and Prize Pig.
Sophie Dillon, local buyer at Tesco, said: “We’re looking forward to bringing the Skinny Pig and Newmarket Pig sausages to more of our customers and supporting Powters as it expands its business.”
A number of other sausage producers have enjoyed success over the past year.
Fastest-growing
In May, Heck! Food was placed 21st in the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies in the UK, having achieved sales growth of 92.48%.
The company also featured in the most recent season of the BBC’s Inside the Factory television series, exploring the inside of its Bedale factory.
Strong sausage sales and export growth boosted Cranswick’s annual results, published in May, helping the business post a rise in revenues.
Meanwhile, start-up pretzel manufacturer Indie Bay Snacks is set to launch its products in 200 Sainsbury’s stores across the country, the brand’s first major multiple listing since it launched a year ago.
