Nestlé UK has launched Scaries, a Halloween-themed makeover of its popular Smarties chocolate beans.

Bags of the sweets are filled with autumn coloured brown and orange Smarties, with the logo changed to say Scaries alongside a ghostly Halloween design.

It followed the launch of Unicorn Smarties and orange flavoured Smarties, similarly themed limited edition versions of the sweets.

Stephanie Scales, brand manager for Smarties, said: “This is the first time we are offering Halloween themed Smarties and we are sure our fans will love this new ghostly version of their favourite sweets.”

Scaries are available in Asda stores across the country and selected Tesco stores.

Home baking brand Green’s is launch a range of Halloween-themed cake mixes across convenience stores this October.

Halloween Cookie and Halloween Cakes mixes were described as easy to make and contain a chocolate pen to allow consumers to create their own ghoulish designs.

The launch was also supported by a social media campaign that encouraged consumers to submit pictures of their completed cakes and cookies to Green’s Facebook page, Instagram or Twitter.

Green’s spokesperson Rob Allardyce said: “We are delighted to be launching our new Halloween Cakes and Halloween Cookies mixes. We have tested and tasted a variety of ingredients, and we believe that our new products will give our customers the opportunity to bake the most haunting Halloween treats at home.”

Independent brewer Robinsons has launched its second to last movie-themed beer for 2018, Freddy Brewger, just in time for Halloween.

Named after the villain of the Nightmare on Elm Street series of films, the dark red beer was said to have a rich and deeply complex flavour with a hint of blackcurrant.

Pump artwork for the beer featured the iconic claw weapon used throughout the films and a font reminiscent of the movie’s logo.   

Gill Yates, brands manager for Robinsons Brewery, said: “We’ve had a line-up of many acknowledged TV and movie inspired seasonal ales this year, which have proven to be extremely popular amongst our drinkers.

“With Halloween and winter around the corner, Freddy Brewger is the perfect beer for this time of year. We really wanted to capture the iconic horror of the movie in our artwork, to make this beer more fun and relatable to our drinkers.”

Global snacking company Pladis has launched a range of Halloween inspired cakes under its McVitie’s brand.

Some of the brands most popular flavours are available, including McVitie’s Jaffa Freaky cake bars, McVitie’s Jaffa Lemon and Slime cake bars, McVitie’s Digestives Beastly Bakes and McVitie’s Hobnobs Terrifying Toffee Apple Flapjacks.

McVitie’s head of marketing Claire Hooper said: “We know consumers love this season and these four products allow us to hit three occasions – a lunchbox treat, a ‘me-time’ moment and an individually wrapped cake for trick or treaters.

“We’re confident these products will give great stand out on shelf and be popular with McVitie’s fans, giving retailers a fantastic opportunity to pick up additional impulse purchases by showcasing a great Halloween range”.

Alcoholic drinks producer Cranes has positioned its Cranberry and Blood Orange Liqueur as the ‘perfect’ ingredient for Halloween inspired cocktails.

Cranes provided a number of recipes to use the blood red liqueur in, including a bloody pomegranate Cosmo and trick or treat cocktail.

Cranes Liqueur is available at a host of farm shops, garden centres, bars and pubs across the UK, as well as online through its website.

Sweet treats manufacturer Tangerine Confectionery launched two new products for Halloween under its Barratt brand, as it aims to capitalise on a growing trend of adults buying retro sweets to recapture their childhoods.

The 450g Barratt Halloween bucket contained a mix of consumer favourites, including refresher Rolls, Dip Babs, Fruit Salad bars and classic sweets such as cola bottles, foam shrimps and foam bananas. Tangerine positioned the bucket as a best seller this October.

Tangerine has also revamped its Barratt Halloween Bag with new artwork and features a range of retro sweets. The relaunch followed 8.2% sales growth of the Halloween bag format in 2017, according to market research company IRI.

Russell Tanner, marketing and category director at Tangerine Confectionery, said: “The Halloween confectionery market has grown by 34% over the last two years and we don’t expect this growth to slow down. 

“Last year we saw sales of our best-selling Halloween Bag fly off retailers’ shelves, and we’re expecting this year’s Halloween range to be even more successful.”

Müller UK & Ireland has added a new Halloween-themed variant to its Müller Corners range of Yogurts.

Müller Crunch Corner Halloween edition is available in two variants: a vanilla flavoured yogurt with skull sharped chocolate biscuits and a strawberry flavour yogurt with white chocolate crispy ghosts.

The two variants are available in a six-pack containing three of each yogurt, while the vanilla yogurt is available as a single stock keeping unit.

Soreen’s latest limited edition malt loaf has screamed onto supermarket shelves in time for the month of terror.

The Halloween Scream range is available in in two flavours: Chocolate and Blood Orange, made using natural blood orange and milk chocolate chips, alongside Toffee Apple Lunchbox Loaves made with apple puree and toffee pieces. 

Available in five individually wrapped servings, the healthy snacks have a recommended retail price of £1 and are available in Waitrose, Tesco, Co-Op, Aldi, Spar, Nisa and Lidl.

Handmade ice cream producer Simply has launched a new gingerbread variant to celebrate Halloween.

The new flavour is made with homemade ginger biscuit and ginger stem pieces and is available for £4.99 for a 500ml pot.

Managing director Sally Newall said: “It’s already a favourite with our testers as tastes glorious, it’s rich, sweet and zingy – perfect with Apple Pie.”
