British Lion Eggs repeated calls for the EU to raise egg processing safety standards
Egg accreditation body British Lion has renewed its call for the EU to raise egg processing safety standards across Europe after liquid egg whites produced in France, and available in the UK, were recalled due to salmonella.

In September, the Food Standards Agency recalled a batch of Dr Zak’s Barn Farmed Liquid Egg White that was believed to be at risk of the presence of salmonella.

British Lion said this latest incident followed the publication of a 2016 Government report that highlighted three separate cases involving salmonella in imported egg products. The report concluded that the risk from domestically-produced egg products was lower.

“The gap in safety standards between British Lion egg products and non-UK produced egg products is clear,” said British Lion chairman Ian Jones. “It is time to put in place more stringent egg safety standards.”
