Grocery think-tank and training charity IGD has appointed AG Barr non-executive director and Natures Way Foods head Susan Barratt as its new chief executive, effective from 1 January 2019.

Barratt succeeds former chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch who stepped down from the role in September this year.

She joins the company after leading Natures Way for more than a decade, during which she doubled turnover of the manufacturer and developed relationships with both retailers and foodservice organisations.

Prior to this Barratt held senior roles at both Costa owner Whitbread and shipping firm Geest. She is also a non-executive director for sausage maker Higgidy and has served on the IGD trust board as a trustee since 2016.

‘Robust foundations’

Commenting on Barratt’s appointment, IGD president Leendert Den Hollander said: “Her experience across the food and grocery industry, alongside a strong understanding of IGD and its work, will be robust foundations to build and grow IGD’s important contribution in the years ahead and will further reinforce IGD’s position at the heart of the food and grocery industry.”

Morrisons chairman and incoming IGD president Andrew Higginson added that Barratt’s appointment came at a time of great challenge and opportunity for the food and grocery industry.

“I look forward to working with her and seeing the impact I am confident she will make,” said Higginson.

‘Strong manufacturing background’

“She brings with her strong commercial experience spanning the industry and I am sure that her background in managing and developing retailer relationships, coupled with a strong manufacturing and food service background will be a real asset to IGD.”

Barratt said she was looking forward to working with both the IGD team and the industry to help tackle challenges that the industry faces and build on opportunities that already exist.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Diageo GB managing director Charles Ireland announced he was to step down from his role after 20 years with the company.
