Fire fighters attended an incident at Walkers Snack Foods’ Leicester site on 17 April, after a fire broke out in an oven.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the fire at the Leycroft Road site at 11:36am. Four appliances from across the county attended the call.

Upon arrival, fire fighters confirmed the blaze was contained within an industrial oven and that Walkers staff had already been evacuated. Two breathing apparatus and one hose reel was on standby.

‘Dealt with quickly’

A Walkers spokesman said: “We can confirm the fire brigade briefly attended our Bursom Road site this morning. They dealt very quickly with a minor incident and no one was hurt. The site is now up and running again.”

The oven was cooled using its integrated system as fire crews monitored, leaving the scene just before 2pm. Production restarted at the factory within a couple of hours.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, a blaze at a gin distillery in North Yorkshire was attended by fire crews, after a still reportedly exploded.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service was alerted to the fire at Masons Yorkshire Gin’s Bedale site at 8:04 Tuesday morning (April 2). Upon arrival, firefighters found the building well alight, prompting crews to request further assistance from Leyburn, Ripon, Richmond and Stokesley fire stations.
