DS Smith said that, although the type of board punnets it has supplied to Waitrose for Duchy Organic grapes could be used across a range of fruits, there were other applications where plastic was still preferred.
DS Smith said it worked with Waitrose and fruit supplier Primafruit to ensure the recycled board punnet met all supply-chain needs.
But Sam Jones, sustainability strategy and communications manager at DS Smith, said there were examples where plastics were more sustainable.
“Larger produce such as broccoli is typically transported to store and displayed in reusable plastic crates,” he said, adding this could be a lower-carbon option.
However, he did not provide examples of sustainable plastics for individual consumer packs.
“Our sustainable punnets can be used across a range of fruits,” Jones added.
