Food ingredients firm EDME has appointed Dr Jisun Lee as its new head of innovation.

Molecular biologist Lee joins the business from US spices and flavourings producer McCormick, where she spent 11 months as account manager.

Prior to this, she held senior roles across a number of food and drink manufacturing and food science companies, including biscuit maker Pladis, baked goods manufacturer Rich Products and Campden BRI.

‘Experience and a fresh eye’

Commenting on Lee’s appointment, EDME managing director Mark Hodson said: “Jisun comes to us with a great deal of relevant experience and a fresh eye to look at our current range – including wholegrain, malted and gluten-free ingredients – but also, importantly, new ingredients and processes.

“She will work closely with the raw-material procurement, technical and production teams to create new ingredients - and combinations of ingredients - with specific functional benefits for both existing and new product categories.”

Lee will work closely with EDME’s customers’ research and development teams to identify and develop their natural ingredient offerings.

‘Delivering results’

She added: “Part of my job will be to showcase to customers all the different ways in which we can support them – and then delivering the results.

“And whatever new ingredients – or new ways of using ingredients – we come up with, they will add value in nutritional, taste, texture, appearance, and monetary terms. That’s my mission.”

Meanwhile, drinks firm Square Root, which makes non-alcoholic cocktails, sodas and tonics has bolstered its senior team with the appointment of Nick McKay as its new commercial director.

His appointment followed the close of a £570,000 equity crowdfund raise, which smashing its £250,000 target by more than 200%. Square Root plans to use the money to start offering canned versions of its drinks from next month.
