Egg supplier St Ewe launches ambient egg white drink
The NPD will be available for consumer purchase from next week in three sizes: 1,000ml, 500ml and 250ml. It builds on the success of its Super Eggs, which are enriched with selenium and omega-3 and are sold in 87 Tesco stores.
At the same time, the company, which is based at Ventonwyn Farm near Truro has started work on a 4,500m2 packing centre, which it hopes will be operational by spring next year. The new facility is expected to create more than 20 jobs.
St Ewe director Rebecca Tonks told Food Manufacture the facility would have several eco-friendly features. "The building itself is well insulated with evaporation ponds for water run off and hope to have a ground source heat system which offers more all year round environmental attributes.
Looking to increase biodiversity
"We have opted for a permeable car park surface to encourage more natural drainage and are looking to increase the biodiversity of the eight acre site by planting many more trees and thickening hedgerows."
Tonks has explained to Food Manufacture how and why St Ewe enriches its eggs with selenium and long chain omega-3 via algae in its hen feed, which is then passed into the eggs the hens lay. The eggs contain these nutrients in sufficient quantities to make 'high in' claims on boxes.
St Ewe began life as a dairy farm, bought by Christine and Richard Tonks in the late 1960s. The company supplies products to customers ranging from local independent retailers and Müller UK & Ireland Group's milk float delivery service to Amazon, Ocado and more than 220 Tesco outlets.
As its name suggests, all St Ewe's eggs are free range. Alongside Super Eggs and standard eggs, the company supplies Rich Yolk eggs and small batches of liquid pasteurised egg.
