British Organic Dairy Co has secured listings in 2,400 stores across the US

Organic UK dairy co-operative Omsco (Organic Milk Suppliers Cooperative) has expanded into the US with the launch of its British Organic Dairy Co (BODC) branded range of cheddars into stores across the country.

The cheeses – including organic Mature, Extra Mature and Vintage variants – will be made available in 2,400 stores in the US via recently appointed importer and distributor Trugman-Nash.

Commenting on the growth of the BODC brand, Omsco head of business development Peter Andrew said: “The reaction of US grocery buyers to our British Organic Dairy Co. range of Organic Cheddar has been really positive.

‘Listings across the States’

“We now have over 2,400 listings secured in stores across the States and with container shipments of BODC Cheddar now arriving in the US every month we are confident that sales will go from strength to strength.”

BODC was set up by Omsco and dairy processor Wyke Farms to focus on the production of organic dairy products to ‘exploit opportunities in the sector and ride out uncertainties in a post-Brexit world’.

Launched in December of 2017, Wyke Farms hoped the collaboration would boost the flagging organic dairy sector, which at the time had been underperforming relative to overall dairy.

Wyke Farms produces the BODC range using Omsco farmers’ milk which is accredited by the USDA and UK Soil Association to be free-from the use of pesticides, herbicides, artificial fertilisers, GMOs and antibiotics.

International showing

The range drummed up interest at two of the largest food trade fairs held in the US, the International Dairy Deli and Bakery Association 2022 event in Atlanta and the Specialty Food Association's 66th Summer Fancy Food Show in New York.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Cheshire-based cheese maker Joseph Heler acquired Futura Foods Wales for an undisclosed sum.

Commenting on the acquisition, Joseph Heler managing director George Heler said: “It offers the Joseph Heler customer base increased capability and capacity across all cheese formats. In addition, we have further capability investments planned for this year securing a really positive future for current employees and future employees in the area.”
