Consumers are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their food and the welfare of animals, according to new research.

The survey by Arla Foods, the global dairy company, revealed that almost nine in ten (87%) consumers said they care about animal welfare, and eight in ten (78%) claimed they were increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their food. 

As response to these concerns Arla has introduced a new set of welfare and sustainability standards across its branded milk to make shopping simpler for conscious consumers. 

On-pack logo

Arla C.A.R.E will feature a new on-pack logo across its milk portfolio of Arla Cravendale, Arla BOB and Arla Big Milk which represents higher standards across: C – Cooperative, A – Animal Welfare, R – Renewable Energy and E – Ecosystem.  

It said that every Arla C.A.R.E farmer will meet standards that include a requirement for the cows to be able to graze freely when weather conditions allow, that the farmers support biodiversity and restore natural ecosystems and commit to further reducing their overall carbon footprint through using renewable energy on farm.  

“Arla dairy farmers are already amongst the most caring and climate efficient farmers in the world, and we are proud to go even further by introducing these farm standards to help nurture and protect our herds, land, and farmers,” said Kate Liversidge, senior agricultural manager at Arla. 

High standard

“We know that understanding where food comes from and how it’s made is hugely important to people, and through the Arla C.A.R.E programme, we can help our shoppers feel confident that their milk has been produced to an extremely high standard by Arla’s caring farmers.” 

Arla farmer, Alex Hollands, said: “My herd’s health and wellbeing is always a top priority on my farm, and I think it’s important that consumers are aware of the high standards we have in place.”
