Sysco GB announces £15m investment in Scotland creating 100 jobs
The funding will lead to the creation of around 100 new jobs, with plans in place to expand the depot by more than 25%.
As part of the development, Brakes Scotland is committed to growing the number of Scottish products it sells. Once complete, the site’s expansion will allow the company to significantly increase the size of its locally sourced Scottish product range.
Newhouse is already one of the largest distribution centres in the Sysco GB network and once planning permission has been granted, the site will grow to more than 200,000 square feet. This will be coupled with improving the facilities to allow the company to increase the range of local fresh products it can sell.
Sysco GB operates foodservice businesses including Brakes, KFF and Medina Foodservice, while employing around 8,000 people who service more than 20,000 customers from 30 depots across the country. It forms the British arm of Sysco, which operates 333 distribution centres around the world.
Sysco and Brakes committed to a ‘market-leading range’
Brakes sells a comprehensive range of fresh, frozen and ambient products, as well as catering equipment, delivers to businesses which serve food including pubs, restaurants, schools and restaurants across Scotland.
Sysco GB chief executive Paul Nieduszynski said that Brakes Scotland has shown steady growth over the past few years which has allowed it to serve people and businesses “right across the nation”.
“The investment that we are making in the Newhouse facility to increase our capacity and grow our Scottish range shows our commitment to providing market-leading range and service to our existing and new customers across Scotland,” Nieduszynski added.
The announcement comes not long after it was confirmed that more than 400 Brakes Scotland employee have secured a pay rise. This comes after Unite the union negotiated a pay rise of between 19.3% and 23.2% on behalf of warehouse workers and distribution staff based in Motherwell.
