Meat alternatives manufacturer MYCO has hired David Wood as it new chief executive.

Wood had served as the chief executive of vegan brand VBites until recently, but the firm announced earlier this month that it had been forced to appoint administrators.

MYCO is aiming to ramp up production of plant-based protein at its new purpose-built production site in North Yorkshire, a process that Wood will now oversee.

The firm’s 20,000 square foot site in Leeming Bar includes a vertically farmed production unit which is one of the first in the UK.

In addition to his role with VBites, Wood has led senior management teams and implemented a strategic direction for several food firms including Biscuits International and Northumbrian Fine Foods. He has around 25 years of experience in the sector to date.

Reflecting on his decision to join MYCO, Wood said it was an “exciting time in the company’s expansion”.

This company has huge potential, and extraordinary work is being done here every single day to make a new generation of mouthwatering and sustainable plant-based products that make swapping out meat that bit easier for consumers,” he continued.

I was blown-away by the vision and ethos at MYCO, and I couldn’t be more excited about the future and where the company is headed.”

MYCO’s co-founder and chairman John Shepherd, added: “This is an exciting time for MYCO, and we know David is the right person to help us grow the business.

“His track record speaks for itself, and with decades of experience in the food sector – including sustainable food producers – he’s a perfect fit for what is a key role for MYCO.

“We are all delighted he’s joined the business, and we can’t wait to see just how far we go in 2024.”
