JS Davidson has expanded its business with the acquisition of a new cold storage facility.

As part of the deal, the Peterborough-based temperature-controlled solutions specialist has purchased the cold storage arm of GXO Logistics UK, which includes a 3.5-acre warehouse in Spalding, Lincolnshire, with 6,500 frozen pallet spaces and 15 members of staff.

The site will operate as Spalding Cold Store Ltd moving forward, but as part of the JS Davidson family.

JS Davidson gained access to the facility in May 2024 and has since secured BRCGS AA accreditation, "demonstrating best practice in ensuring the quality and safety of food products remains optimal during both storage and distribution process".

The announcement follows a period of substantial investment over the past 18 months by the business which has seen the acquisition of a Portable Hybrid Blast Freeze / tempering unit, as well as new vehicles, forklifts, WMS, GEA refrigerated compressor and an air-cooled cooling tower totalling more than £1m.

Plans are also in place to expand the Peterborough site, with JS Davidson management aiming to double the size of its business within the next four years.

The new developments are all designed to increase productivity, drive greater efficiencies, reduce carbon footprint and provide added value to the firm’s customer base.

Spalding Cold Store customers will now benefit from JS Davidson’s range of services which include distribution, ambient, chilled and frozen storage and supply chain solution services.

Commenting on the acquisition of the GXO cold storage business, JS Davison managing director John Davidson said: “Spalding Cold Store is an incredibly exciting new development for the business. It is a sizeable site and one which we are confident will provide a host of opportunities.

“There is already an excellent team in place coupled with an impressive customer base providing a fantastic opportunity for JS Davidson as we continue to grow the business.”
