Waitrose has recalled a Chinese takeaway product because the label didn’t mention that it contained molluscs.

All bags of the ‘Waitrose Chinese Takeaway Bag for 2’ with a use by date between 21 September 2024 and 4 December 2024 featured the faulty label and have been recalled.

The recall was issued again on 4 December, the last use by date quoted, because the product is suitable for freezing and therefore there may be products from the recall period still being kept in people’s freezers that need to be recalled.

The fact that the Chinese takeaway bags contained molluscs without that being declared on the label meant that the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to molluscs.

The recall was specific to Waitrose stores in England, Wales and Scotland.

Waitrose response

In response, Waitrose has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations that will have informed their members about the recall.

The retailer has also issued a recall notice to its customers explaining why the product has been recalled.

The notices have advised anyone that has purchased the Chinese takeaway bag with an allergy to molluscs not to eat the content and return the product to a Waitrose store for a full refund.

“We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused,” said Waitrose.

Anyone with additional concerns can contact the supermarket chain directly.
