Listeria scare sparks cheese recall

Dunnes Stores has pulled nine cheese products from shelves in Northern Ireland (NI) due to a possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The products have been manufactured by or contain ingredients that originated from Wicklow Farmhouse Cheese in the Republic or Ireland which are sold in NI by Dunnes.

Included in the recall are 150g packs of Dunnes Stores Wicklow Smoked Cheddar, Dunnes Stores Wicklow Tomato & Herb Cheddar, Dunnes Stores Wicklow Nettle & Chive Cheddar, Dunnes Stores Wicklow Blue Brie, Simply Better Wicklow Ban in Ceramic Dish and Simply Better Double Cream Wicklow Ban.

Larger packs recalled

Dunnes has also recalled 735g packs of its Simply Better Farmhouse Irish Cheese Selection, 705g packs of its Simply Better & Neven Maguire Cheese Selection and 800g packs of its Simply Better Irish Brie Cheese & Cranberry Quiche.

The recall applies to all best before dates for the products in question.

Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores in NI that are selling the products. Dunnes has advised consumers not to eat the affected products and instead return them to their nearest stores where a full refund will be given.

Listeria symptoms

Listeria monocytogenes can cause symptom similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

FSA and FSS issued 136 food alerts in 2023/24 compared with 154 alerts in 2022/23. This reduction was primarily driven by the fall in Allergy Alerts. FSA and FSS published a total of 66 Allergy Alerts in 2023/24 compared with 87 Allergy Alerts in 2022/23, a 24% decrease.

Meanwhile, Tesco has recalled a batch of packaged beef slices because the label featured the incorrect use by date.

New packs of ‘Tesco 10 Cooked Beef Slices’ weighing 125g were put on sale with a use by date of 24 January 2025, but the batch is only safe to eat until 24 December 2024.

The retailer also recalled batches of red cabbage and chicken skewers this month because they featured the incorrect use by date.
