Lidl has reported record-breaking festive sales as the retailer saw turnover exceed £1bn in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve for the first time.

Sales were up 7% compared to 2023, with more than 2m customers visiting Lidl stores across Britain in the lead up to Christmas.

Popular products included its range of pigs in blankets, with more than 16m packs sold, while the retailer parted ways with 750,000 turkey roasting joints.

A further 8m stuffing balls and 2m litres of gravy were sold, with 6,500 tonnes of vegetables purchased in the week of Christmas alone.

On the drinks front, Lidl sold the equivalent of 11m glass of sparkling wine, driven in part by a 25% year-on-year rise in Champagne sales.

Meanwhile, the discounter donated approximately 1.25m meals during December 2024 via its partnership with Neighbourly, as well as £125,000 in grants to local charities.

Consumers ‘trust’ Lidl

As it stands, Lidl has around 970 stores across England, Scotland and Wales, and employs 34,000 people.

This includes the 10 new locations opened in the lead up to Christmas which created around 400 jobs.

CEO at Lidl GB, Ryan McDonnell, said that after 30 years of operating in Britain the retailer was thrilled to have welcomed more customers to its store than ever before.

“That’s a strong reflection of the trust our customers place in us and the dedication of our colleagues and suppliers, who work so hard to deliver an outstanding Christmas for the communities we serve,” McDonnell added.

“In 2024, we continued to raise the bar with product innovation, especially within our Deluxe range, as well as supporting all the community initiatives that are deeply important to us. It’s all been about bringing people together and sharing the joy of Christmas.”

Looking ahead, McDonnell said that Lidl was excited to build on this momentum by expanding its presence across the country and “continuing to deliver the highest quality at the best prices on the market”.
