Discount retailer Aldi enjoyed a record setting Christmas period in 2024, with sales exceeding £1.6bn in the four weeks up to Christmas Eve.

Its premium range also performed well as sales jumped by 12% compared with the same period in 2023.

A record 350,000 turkeys were sold during the four week period, alongside 400 tonnes of beef and 3m sprouts. Shoppers also purchased around 50m mince pies and around 25m pigs in blankets.

Furthermore, 23 December was Aldi’s busiest ever trading day as it served nearly 3m customers across the UK.

Commenting on the record setting sales, Aldi UK chief executive Giles Hurley said: “Our offering of outstanding quality British products at unbeatable prices was a winning combination yet again this Christmas as customers wanted to celebrate in style after an uncertain year, but with more challenges ahead, they wanted to do it without breaking the bank.”

Additionally, Aldi was named as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for 2024 by Which?, the fourth year running it has received the accolade, and Hurley confirmed that it would seek to maintain the price gap with other supermarkets as the new year continues.

“We dropped hundreds of prices last year as part of our ongoing mission to make outstanding quality, affordable food accessible to everyone,” he added.

“As we look ahead to the new year, which for many will mean the prospect of living costs rising again, many families will be nervous about what 2025 holds.

“Against this background, our mission remains clear: we will not only remain the UK’s lowest-priced supermarket, but we will ensure the price gap between ourselves and the traditional full-price supermarkets is as big as ever.”

The festive period was also a profitable one for Aldi’s discounter rival Lidl, which saw turnover top £1bn for the first time.

Sales at Lidl were up 7% compared to 2023, with more than 2m customers visiting its stores across Britain in the lead up to Christmas.
