Lepley, who joined Asda this month from Morrisons, will also sit on the retailer’s executive team moving forward.
Chief supply chain officer is a new role created by Asda, and will see Lepley tasked with leading the firm’s food and general merchandise supply operations.
For the past five years Lepley served as the group retailer director at Morrisons, while he also has experience as operations director at the retailer.
He initially joined Morrisons from Asda in 2016, having previously spent 15 years with Asda, starting as a Christmas temp colleague in the Grantham store and leaving as vice president for online grocery operations.
The appointment of Lepley forms part of the wider leadership changes announced by Asda earlier this month, including the appointment of Ade McKeon as vice president for ambient.
Writing on his LinkedIn page, Lepley said: “I’m very proud to share that I’m returning to my roots and starting a new position as Chief Supply Chain Officer at Asda.”
Meanwhile, Asda executive chair Allan Leighton, who rejoined the retailer in November 2024, said: “Delivering the outstanding value and legendary service our customers demand begins with making sure they can get the products they want every time they shop with us.
“David has considerable experience in grocery logistics and supply chain, and I am delighted that he is coming home to Asda to lead this key area for the business.”
On the appointments elsewhere within the business, Leighton added: “Asda’s mission is to deliver the value ordinary working people, and their families demand from us. To do this, we need to be and are rediscovering our ‘Asda-ness’. I’m delighted to be announcing these leadership changes as we start this journey.”
Leighton served as Asda CEO between 1996 and 2001, before moving onto senior roles with Canadian food retail business Loblaw Companies and Co-op in the UK.
