Greggs is recalling a batch of baked products because of a packaging error which may put people with a certain allergy at risk.

Some boxes of ‘Greggs Steak Bake 2 Pack’ have been incorrectly filled with sausage, bean and cheese melts, rather than steak bakes.

The sausage, bean and cheese melts contain sulphites, but this is not communicated on the steak bake packaging, which means that the product poses a possible health risk to anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites.

The bakes are sold exclusively via discount retailer Iceland in 280g packs, while the affected batch has a best before date of 19 May 2025.

Greggs has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations about the issue, which will tell their members about the recall.

The baked goods manufacturer and retailer has also issued point-of-sale notices which explain to customers why the product is being recalled.

“If you have purchased the above product please do not consume [it],” the notices read.

“Please return to your nearest Iceland store for a full refund.

“This 2-pack product is exclusive to Iceland and therefore the recall is only applicable to products purchased from Iceland stores. No other products, date codes or batches are affected.”

Greggs employs 32,000 people in the UK across more than 2,000 retail stores as well as its manufacturing and distribution centres.

In 2024, Greggs announced plans for a new national distribution centre in Kettering which is project to be operational within the first half of 2027.
