Sonoco has agreed to the acquisition of leading food packaging firm Eviosys in a deal worth approximately $3.9bn.

Based in the US, Sonoco offers a vast array of packaging products and solutions, with the deal for Eviosys part of a wider strategic move aimed at combining the strengths of both firms to enhance service and innovation in the metal packaging industry. Meanwhile, Eviosys manufactures food cans and ends, aerosol cans, metal closures and promotional packaging to preserve the products of hundreds of consumer brands.

In a statement issued by Eviosys, the firm said the deal will lead to the creation of “the world’s leading metal food can and aerosol packaging manufacturer”, with customers set to benefit from an expanded global footprint and enhanced capabilities. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2024.

Following the completion of the deal, Eviosys CEO Tomás López will continue to lead Sonoco’s EMEA metal packaging business, ensuring a seamless transition and continuity in leadership.

Reflecting on the deal, Howard Coker, president and CEO of Sonoco, commented: “The acquisition of Eviosys establishes our global leadership in metal food can and aerosol packaging, marking an exciting milestone in our strategy to enhance our core metal packaging platform. We are committed to building on Eviosys’ strong foundation and delivering superior value to our customers.”

López added: “By joining forces with Sonoco, we will bring our high-quality, sustainable, and innovative packaging solutions to a broader market. Our shared values and commitment to customer service will drive the success of this acquisition, and I look forward to continuing to lead our dedicated team in this new chapter.”

With 45 sites across Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Eviosys recently reopened its R&D centre in Wantage, Oxfordshire, and invited Food Manufacture to view its array of sustainable packaging options.
