Asda recalls crisps due to undeclared allergen

Pack of ‘Asda Extra Special Sea Salt & Chardonnay Wine Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps’ are being recalled because the possible presence of milk has not been listed on the label.

This is the result of a packaging error, which means that some packs contain cheese and onion crisps that do contain milk. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

The recall has been applied to all 150g bags with a best before date of 21 September 2024.

In response, Asda has issued point of sale notices explaining the recall to customers and informing those with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents not to eat the product. Instead, they have been told to return the product to the nearest Asda store for a refund, with or without a receipt.

The notice reads: “No other date codes are affected. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”​

Milk is one of the main 14 allergens as defined by the Food Standards Agency and food law in the UK. The others are as follows: celery, cereals containing gluten (such as wheat, barley and oats), crustaceans (such as prawns, crabs and lobsters), eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs (such as mussels and oysters), mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphur dioxide and sulphites (if the sulphur dioxide and sulphites are at a concentration of more than ten parts per million) and tree nuts (such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios and macadamia nuts).

Elsewhere, Asda has recently announced the appointment of David Devany as its new vice president for eCommerce.​​

Devany is set to join Asda from Iceland Foods where he has served as group chief customer, marketing and digital officer since 2020. The exact date of his start has not yet been announced.

With more than 25 years of experience in the fields of eCommerce, digital and marketing, Devany will be tasked with growing Asda’s presence in the online market.
