Mahou San Miguel (MSM) is not renewing its agreement with Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) for the production and distribution of San Miguel beer.

In a statement published on 2 July, CMBC confirmed that the exclusive San Miguel license deal with MSM will come to an end on 31 December 2024.

Instead, MSM has expanded its deal with Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I, a subsidiary of AB InBev, bringing the Spanish brewer’s two leading brands under one umbrella. Budweiser Brewing Group has distributed Mahou in the UK since 2021.

Explaining the decision, MSM managing director Alberto Rodríguez-Toquero said: “Today’s announcement marks a new chapter for Mahou San Miguel in the UK, as we partner with Budweiser Brewing Group to bring the world’s most loved Spanish beer to a larger number of UK consumers. This agreement further extends the relationship between our two companies, the UK is an important market for San Miguel and we are confident that Budweiser Brewing Group will succeed in fulfilling our ambitious plans for the brand.”

Jason Warner, CEO Europe at AB InBev added: “We are delighted to bring San Miguel into our portfolio of brands. Our customers can now look forward to experiencing the exceptional quality that both Mahou San Miguel and Budweiser Brewing Group are known for, as we toast to a future with more cheers!”

Between now and the end of the year, CMBC has said that it will work closely with MSM and its new licence partner to ensure a smooth transition.

CMBC chief executive Paul Davies commented: “Naturally, we are disappointed by the decision, and are working to mitigate the impact on our business.

“We are incredibly proud of our many achievements over more than 15 years with MSM, massively driving distribution and significantly growing San Miguel brand volume.”
