Several Morrisons and Hovis branded crumpet products have been recalled because they may contain small pieces of metal.

The announcement was made by bakery business Rathbones Kear, which is owned by Morrisons, and Hovis on 2 August 2024 and stated that the possible presence of metal has made the products unsafe to eat.

The recall applies to the following SKUs: Morrisons The Best Crumpets with Sourdough, Morrisons Savers Crumpets, Morrisons Crumpets and Hovis Crumpets.

Each one is sold in a six pack and has a best before date of 6 or 7 August 2024.

'No other products affected'

Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products, informing customers why the products are being recalled.

Anyone that has bought one of the above products has been told not to eat them and instead to return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund (a receipt is not required).

“No other products are affected by this issue,” the recall notice read.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and assure customers of our continuing commitment to the highest standard of product quality and safety.”

Meanwhile, Sophie Tuson, environment and climate change practice lead at law firm RPC, has broken down the potential impact of the EU's new flagship supply chain law – the Corporate Sustainability and Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) – in an exclusive article for Food Manufacture.

After being adopted on 25 July, the CSDDD will come into force in stages between now and 2027.
