Timothy Taylor’s poaches new CEO from winemaker Chapel Down

He will replace current boss Tim Dewey when he retires in March 2025 after 10 years with the business.

With drinks industry experienced gained by working on brands including Bombay Sapphire, Penfolds, Chase Vodka, Bacardi, Strongbow and San Miguel, Carter is currently the chief executive of English winemaker Chapel Down Group.

Arriving at Chapel Down in 2021, Carter will continued to lead the business through its ongoing strategic review which was announced on 25 June 2024. The process to hire a new CEO will commence shortly.

‘Looking forward to tackling challenges’

"I am delighted to be joining the Timothy Taylor family-owned business at this exciting stage in its history,” ​said Carter.

"Since 1858 Taylor’s have been producing outstanding quality cask ales and I am looking forward to tackling the category challenges and building the position of Timothy Taylor’s as the number one cask ale brand in the UK.”​

Carter also praised the outgoing Dewey for doing an “excellent job” ​with the support of the firm’s leadership team and board.

“It is going to be great to work with them to create the next chapter in the successful development of the company,”​ he concluded.

Timothy Taylor’s chair Tim Clarke echoed Carter’s comments about Dewey: "The board are extremely grateful to Tim for all that he has achieved over the past decade, in developing the business through a sustained focus on sales and marketing as well as investment in brewing quality, including the current £9m capital programme at the Knowle Spring Brewery.​

"In that time, our leading brand, Landlord, has grown from No 8 in the cask ale market to recently achieving the No 1 position by value in the category.”​

Clarke added that the board was pleased to have appointed Carter: “[He] has an extensive and proven record in the development of premium drinks brands."​

Elsewhere, Chapel Down chair Martin Glenn hailed Carter for his contribution to the firm’s “huge success”​ during his tenure.

“He should be very proud of what the business has achieved and the top team he has developed around him,” ​Glenn said.

“I and the board have enjoyed working with Andrew immensely and wish him every success in his new role leading another iconic British brand. Chapel Down is the market leader in the English wine industry which continues to enjoy exceptional growth, and the team is highly motivated to execute the growth strategy and drive the continued development of the world's newest global wine region from the front."​
