£3.5m warehouse under construction at Scotch distillery
The new warehouse will support the continued growth of the Benromach brand by providing additional space for whisky storage and maturation before bottling.
Scottish construction firm Robertson Construction Northern is leading on the project and will build the warehouse in the traditional dunnage style – long and low, with an earthen floor – in order to maintain consistent temperatures required for maturing single malt whisky.
Once finished, the warehouse will have a steel whitewash finish to match the neighbouring warehouses and the historic distillery, with work set to be completed in the late spring of 2025.
Meeting ‘strong demand’
Gordon & MacPhail is a family-owned whisky maker that has been bottling single malt whiskies since 1895.
In 1993, it rescued the Benromach site from closure and has since refurbished the distillery with modern equipment and processes.
Explaining the decision to start work on a new warehouse, Gordon & MacPhail operations director Stuart Urquhart said: “Our award-winning single malt is a great success story and more warehouse space is needed to cope with the strong demand for our hand crafted product.”
Touching on the opportunity to collaborate with Robertson Construction Northern on a fifth project, Urquhart added: “We’re particularly pleased to be working again with another great family firm with its roots in Moray, Robertson Group, who also built our earlier warehouses.”
Founded in Elgin, Robertson Group is one of the largest family-owned construction, infrastructure and support service business in the UK.
Asked about the project, the firm’s regional managing director Ian Phillips also shared his excitement and hailed the “exceptional” growth of the Benromach brand.
“The warehousing is vital to the maturing process of the whisky so it’s a great opportunity for us to apply our expertise for Gordon & MacPhail once more,” Phillips continued.
“We have been working with the company for almost 20 years and as well as being an Elgin-founded, family-run company, we also share their commitment to high-quality craftmanship and support for the local supply chain and community.”
