The leading beer, cider and pub company which owns the likes of Inch’s, Fosters and Bulmers, and of course Heineken, has partnered with carbon platform Net Zero Now to support the wider hospitality industry’s journey to net zero.

Heineken UK joins Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, Pernod Ricard UK and the Sustainable Restaurant Association as industry partners of Net Zero Now’s Net Zero Pubs and Bars Initiative.

The initiative, set up in 2021, is built around the Net Zero Hospitality Protocol - an industry-standard methodology for measuring and reporting emissions from hospitality businesses, developed in collaboration with the industry.

The platform also offers practical tools to help reduce emissions, with a view to supporting SMEs with a credible and affordable route towards net zero.

Alongside helping others in their climate journeys, the company has said this will partnership will support its own sustainability goals of reaching net zero carbon emissions across the whole value chain by 2040, as set out in its ‘Brew A Better World’ strategy.

“The need to reduce energy usage and be more efficient has never been more important for pubs and bars, and we want to play a part in supporting operators to become more sustainable and progress along their own journey towards carbon reduction in their businesses. The hospitality sector is responsible for up to 15% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and the UK Government has set a target for the whole economy to be Net Zero by 2050,” said Will Rice, on-trade director at Heineken UK.

“Having the tools and resources to do so in the most cost-effective and operational efficient way possible is key, so we’re excited to be able to provide our customers with access to Net Zero Pubs and Bars memberships, increasing quality and efficiency whilst reducing both operational costs and emissions. This is a fundamental step forward, and we’re thrilled to be working with Net Zero Now on this brilliant initiative.”

The Initiative has more than 2,800 venues currently signed up and is currently managing over 480,000 tonnes of carbon emissions on its online platform.
