Aldi and Lidl supported with £2m UK consolidation centre

Logistics firm CML has opened a £2m consolidation centre in Lutterworth to support the growth of Aldi and Lidl in the UK and Ireland.

The new facility has created 140 jobs across warehousing, HGV driving and administration functions, while also securing new customers for the facility. All of the new customers supply Aldi and Lidl with chilled food and drink goods.

In addition to the new Lutterworth site, CML also owns a consolidation centre in Telford.

CML is part of Culina Group, an ambient and chilled specialist that provides warehousing, distribution, contract packing, and services for to the food and drink sector. In addition to CML, Culina Group owns firms such as Stobart and The Pallet Network.

‘Increased capacity by 40%’

“Aldi and Lidl now jointly represent around 17.8% of the total food and drink retail market in the UK which is up from 13.6% just five years ago,” ​said Steve Winwood, CEO for Culina Group’s chilled division.

“The new CML Chilled Consolidation Centre in Lutterworth has increased our capacity by over 40%.”

According to Kantar data, Aldi is now the fourth supermarket in the UK with a market share of 10%. Lidl is sixth on 8.1%, just behind Morrisons on 8.5%.

Tesco remains the largest grocer in the country with a market share of 27.6%, as of 4 August 2024.
