Frozen food and seafood firm, The Findus Group has announced plans to cut jobs at its Young’s frozen seafood factory in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire.

The company is entering a consultation period with staff at the facility in Humberstone Road that may result in 84 redundancies from a workforce of around 500.

The consultation will last throughout February, with a decision due towards the end of the month.

The reduction in staff numbers has been brought about by a need to adjust capacity to fit expected production requirements, based on customer contracts that could potentially end in February.

The operations director, Steve Lidgett, said the company regrets the decision but feels that it is necessary if it is to maintain a competitive edge.

Although the Findus Group expects to lose a few of its customer contracts in February, the company sees signs of recovery continuing throughout 2011, Lidgett added.

The jobs cuts are likely to affect people across a number of areas of the business, including production, technical and management roles.
