How engaged are the people who report to you – or your peers? American business magazine Forbes has helped to take the guesswork out of answering that question by publishing 10 top tips to spot complacent workers.

The top three tell-tale signs are disengaged staff – whose head and heart are no longer in their job; workers who have stopped thinking – revealed by an unwillingness to ask questions and to challenge themselves and others; and those who have stopped taking the initiative.

Instead of taking the lead on tasks, they lose their desire to inspire others to follow them and often become distant.

Employers and managers should also worry about workers who don’t invest in themselves – by developing their skills and abilities; workers who take shortcuts – as revealed by becoming less thorough or detailed-oriented than they once were; and those who fail to manage their personal brand.

“Personal branding is a leadership responsibility, not a self-promotion campaign,” according to Forbes.

Alarm bells

Managers’ alarm bells should also chime when workers begin to avoid risk-taking – the confidence to take calculated risks are a key way to advance business, says the report – and when workers lose their passion and no longer become excited about their work.

The final two warning signs are workers who are obviously disgruntled with their current career destination – “those who sulk and play the victim”; and workers who appear to have lost any hope for a brighter future

“When employees are spending too much time on the internet or wasting precious moments in needless corporate politics or gossiping about everyone else’s business – instead of managing their own – give them the hope they desperately need,” said the report.

‘Frustrated with the uncertainty’

Growing numbers of employees are feeling a sense of disengagement at work as they grow frustrated with the uncertainty and lack of long-term stability that surrounds it, it warned.
