Mackie’s of Scotland has secured listings for its ice cream products at hundreds of Sainsbury’s stores across England and Wales.

The manufacturer's Honeycomb ice cream and new flavour Strawberry Swirl will now be available in 500 stores south of the border, building on recent market growth in England and Wales.

Chosen by the friends of Mackie’s members club, the new flavour benefitted for a £50,000 investment in a new sauce machine.

Important milestone

Stuart Common, Sales Director at Mackie's of Scotland has hailed the listings as an important milestone for the business and an encouraging start to the year that built on a trend that saw Mackie’s grow sales in England and Wales by more than 40% in 2020/21.

“While always very happy to see our established flavours finding their way to more consumers over a wider geographic spread, we are especially pleased that our investment in developing new flavours has received a warm welcome by one of the UK’s leading retailers, he added.

“For so long fans of our ice cream have looked on enviously at those in Scotland who can try a broad range of our products. It’s great to be getting second and third flavours into English and Welsh stores.”

BBC coverage

The manufacturer was recently featured on the BBC’s Inside the Factory documentary series, which it claimed help boost the sales for its Honeycomb ice cream by more than 200%.

In February, Mackie's posted record revenues and profit despite battling rising costs and pandemic-related lockdown restrictions.

Turnover at the family-owned business increased by 11% to £18.5m, up from £16.7m. Operating profit rose by 19% to £4.1m (compared to £3.4m), according to annual accounts to the year ending 31 May 2021.

Meanwhile, snack brand Simply Roasted has secured a deal with up-market supermarket chain Booths to supply the retailer’s stores with its non-high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS) crisps.
